The living water

“On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’ ”"

These words of Jesus are in the framework of the rite of the feast of tabernacles. This celebration, which is still celebrated by Jews today, is to go live in a tent away from technology, to teach future generations what the Exodus from Egypt was. On the last day of the feast, the priest poured a vase of water to teach that when they were thirsty, God provided water from the hard flint.

When all the people were mentally transported to that historical moment, Jesus stands up and immortalizes the promise for all those who would believe in Him. The promise is for those who are thirsty, and just as the physical sensation of thirst we notice when we are depleted by lack of fluid, and our body sends a signal to our tongue where the sensation of thirst is generated, in the same way when we are lacking in God, our spirit longs for the presence of the Holy Spirit, without Him we notice the feeling of emptiness, of incompleteness, of waning.

That is why it is important that the Holy Spirit of God grows every day in our being, nourishing our spirit and helping us to live a Christian life. In addition, living water represents something that is in motion, unlike stagnant water that is soon to sour. The torrents of water are a synonym of power, of greatness, imposing as we are when we decide that the power of God through His Spirit will dwell in our being.
